Nancy Smith Smitz was born in 1942 to J. Frank (Jay) Smith Jr. and Anita Jane Ake Smith in Austin, Texas. Her father, Jay, was born in Thorndale, Texas in 1915 and moved to Austin in 1939. Anita was also born in Taylor and married Jay in 1940. Jay Smith was a partner of McCall, Smith, Hibler Insurance until 1944 when he opened the Smith Brothers Chrysler-Plymouth dealership with his brother Edwin.
